Hidden political issues on the Simpsons
January 23rd 2007 09:33
I find it terribly funny (in a haha sense mind you) that after watching the Simpsons for like...17 years you start to see it in a different meaning after you watch an episode for the 10th time.
Well...not so much for tonight's episode at the 6pm timeslot.
For a refresher for avid watchers, Homer comes across a cute and cuddly grizzly bear and hell breaks loose after Mayor Quimby imposes Bear Tax of $5 to patrol the entire Springfield for bears even though they are pretty non-existent in the community. While the community is in uproar over having an extra $5 taken out of their pay, Quimby covers up the tax by blaming immigrants for imposing such a tax hike.
Now how many hidden political messages can you spot in that episode?
For me, quite a few!
Now, I'm not some political activist, I don't give a shit about it to be completely honest. But after watching the Simpsons for so long you see beyond the stupid jokes and notice that the producers are poking fun at American politics and society.
Corruption in politics, unneccesary tax hikes, not listening to the people, propaganda, ailing health system, more dodgyness in politics.
I love the Simpsons.
